History
River West Resort has a long and storied past, dating back to the summer of 1927 when it was founded as Chism's Auto Camp. Originally a campground, it featured campsites, a large kitchen tent, a boathouse, a gas station, and a convenience store. Over the years, 8 motel units and 16 rustic cold-water cabins with an adjoining bathhouse were added, expanding its offerings to meet the needs of travelers.
After World War II, Chism’s Auto Camp adapted to the changing times, housing veterans returning from war and using the GI Bill to attend the nearby University of Nevada, Reno. Modular housing units were introduced, marking the first steps toward more permanent structures. By 1958, the property had evolved again, adding more trailer spaces to accommodate the growing community.
Today, River West Resort honors its rich history while providing modern amenities for guests to enjoy a relaxing escape along the Truckee River.
